    Metaphor, Objects, and Commodities

    This article is a contribution to a symposium that focuses on the ideas of Margaret Jane Radin as a point of departure, and particularly on her analyses of propertization and commodification. While Radin focuses on the harms associated with commodification of the person, relying on Hegel's idea of alienation, we argue that objectification, and in particular objectification of various features of the digital environment, may have important system benefits. We present an extended critique of Radin's analysis, basing the critique in part on Gadamer's argument that meaning and application are interrelated and that meaning changes with application. Central to this interplay is the speculative form of analysis that seeks to fix meaning, contrasted with metaphorical thought that seeks to undermine some fixed meanings and create new meanings through interpretation. The result is that speculative and metaphorical forms are conjoined in an interactive process through which new adaptations emerge. Taking this critique an additional step, we use examples from contemporary intellectual property law discourse to demonstrate how an interactive approach, grounded in metaphor, can yield important insights

    Devices and networks for optical switching

    This thesis is concerned with some aspects of the application of optics to switching and computing. Two areas are dealt with: the design of switching networks which use optical interconnects, and the development and application of the t-SEED optical logic device. The work on optical interconnects looks at the multistage interconnection network which has been proposed as a hybrid switch using both electronics and optics. It is shown that the architecture can be mapped from one dimensional to two dimensional format, so that the machine makes full use of the space available to the optics. Other mapping rules are described which allow the network to make optimum use of the optical interconnects, and the endpoint is a hybrid optical-electronic machine which should be able to outperform an all-electronic equivalent. The development of the t-SEED optical logic device is described, which is the integration of a phototransistor with a multiple quantum well optical modulator. It is found to be important to have the modulator underneath rather than on top of the transistor to avoid unwanted thyristor action. In order for the transistor to have a high gain the collector must have a low doping level, the exit window in the substrate must be etched all the way to the emitter layer, and the etch must not damage the emitter-base junction. A real optical gain of 1.6 has been obtained, which is higher than has ever been reached before but is not as high as should be possible. Improvements to the device are suggested. A new model of the Fabry-Perot cavity is introduced which helps considerably in the interpretation of experimental measurements made on the quantum well modulators. Also a method of improving the contrast of the multiple quantum well modulator by grading the well widths is proposed which may find application in long wavelength transmission modulators. Some systems which make use of the t-SEED are considered. It is shown that the t-SEED device has the right characteristics for use as a neuron element in the optical implementation of a neural network. A new image processing network for clutter removal in binary images is introduced which uses the t-SEED, and a brief performance analysis suggests that the network may be superior to an all-electronic machine

    The measurement of attitudes toward abortion

    Attitudes towards abortion have been a focal point within politics and religion for many years. Many methods have been created to test these attitudes. For example, Hess and Rueb created a 13-item scale and demonstrated its validity. However, this scale has several potential shortcomings. The developers did not report the reliability of the scale and its factor structure. Further, this scale includes a neutral point and legal language. One of the purposes of the present study was to develop a 12-item scale to address these issues. The present study compares and contrasts these two scales. Psychology student\u27s participated in this study. The results indicated that both abortion scales were reliable and valid. A factor analysis indicated that the Hess and Rueb scale has 3 factors, whereas the researchers newly developed scale had two factors. Implications of these findings are discussed

    Oral health status: relationship to nutrient and food intake among 80‐year‐old Japanese adults

    Objectives The aim of this cross‐sectional study was to investigate the relationship of oral health status defined on the basis of presence of posterior occluding pairs ( POP s) and adequacy of removable denture fit as determined by self‐report to nutrient and food intake among older Japanese. Methods The subjects were 353 Japanese aged 80 years in 2008 and were classified into four groups according to the number of POP s, defined as pairs of occluding natural, restored, or fixed prosthetic postcanine teeth (range: 0–8) and removable denture status. The groups were: (i) good dentition ( n  =   56; 8 POP s and no removable prosthesis), (ii) well‐fitting dentures ( n  =   158; <8 POP s with self‐reported good‐fitting dentures), (iii) ill‐fitting dentures ( n  =   70; <8 POP s with self‐reported ill‐fitting dentures), and (iv) compromised dentition ( n  =   69; <8 POP s and no removable prosthesis). Multivariable analysis of the differences in nutrient and food intake outcome variables which were collected via validated food frequency questionnaire among the four oral health status groups was conducted using general linear models. Results Intake of multiple nutrients was significantly ( P  <   0.05) lower in the group with ill‐fitting dentures or compromised dentition than in the good dentition group. Vegetable, fish, and shellfish consumption was significantly lower in the ill‐fitting dentures or compromised dentition groups. No significant differences were seen in dietary intake between the well‐fitting dentures and good dentition groups. Conclusions Dietary intake was poorer in those with self‐perceived ill‐fitting dentures or fewer POP s than among those having all POP s. Regular dental care to maintain intact dentition, as well as dental treatment to replace missing teeth and ensure adequate denture fit and function, may be important to the diet intake and subsequent nutritional status of older Japanese.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/108691/1/cdoe12100.pd

    An interactive exercise system including exercise equipment having a resistance system, a speed sensor, a controller that varies the resistance setting of the exercise equipment, and a playback device for playing pre-recorded video and audio. The controller, operating in conjunction with speed information from the speed sensor and terrain information from media table files, dynamically varies the resistance setting of the exercise equipment in order to simulate varying degrees of difficulty while the playback device concurrently plays back the video and audio to create the simulation that the user is exercising in a natural setting such as a real-world exercise course

    Density and Velocity Fields from the PSCz Survey

    We present the results for the predicted density and peculiar velocity fields and the dipole from the PSCz survey of 15,000 IRAS galaxies over 84% of the sky. We find a significant component to the dipole arising between 6000 and 15,000 km/s, but no significant component from greater distances. The misalignment with the CMB is 20 degrees. The most remarkable feature of the PSCz model velocity field is a coherent large-scale flow along the baseline connecting Perseus-Pisces, the Local Supercluster, Great Attractor and the Shapley Concentration. We have measured the parameter beta using the amplitude of the dipole, bulk flow and point by point comparisons between the individual velocities of galaxies in the MarkIII and SFI datasets, and the large-scale clustering distortion in redshift space.All our results are consistent with beta = 0.6 +- 0.1.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures.     Vacuolar and plasma membrane stripping and autophagic elimination of Toxoplasma gondii in primed effector macrophages

    Apicomplexan protozoan pathogens avoid destruction and establish a replicative niche within host cells by forming a nonfusogenic parasitophorous vacuole (PV). Here we present evidence for lysosome-mediated degradation of Toxoplasma gondii after invasion of macrophages activated in vivo. Pathogen elimination was dependent on the interferon Îł inducible-p47 GTPase, IGTP, required PI3K activity, and was preceded by PV membrane indentation, vesiculation, disruption, and, surprisingly, stripping of the parasite plasma membrane. Denuded parasites were enveloped in autophagosome-like vacuoles, which ultimately fused with lysosomes. These observations outline a series of mechanisms used by effector cells to redirect the fate of a classically nonfusogenic intracellular pathogen toward a path of immune elimination
